In October, representatives of several Transformative Pathways partner organisations will be travelling to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates to participate in the IUCN World Conservation Congress, which will take place from 9th to 15th of October, 2025.

The Congress, which is held every four years, brings governments, civil society and indigenous peoples’ organisations together to share experiences, innovations and the latest research findings, and to agree global priorities for conservation action.

Transformative Pathways is co-sponsoring an exhibition space called the ‘Reimagining Conservation Pavilion’, which will bring indigenous representatives together with conservationists to discuss the need to challenge old paradigms and build on common ground to open up new possibilities for people and nature.

In the Pavilion, Transformative Pathways partners taking part in sessions will include indigenous representatives from Peru, Thailand, Kenya and the Philippines, as well as colleagues from Forest Peoples Programme, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Conservation Science (ICCS) at the University of Oxford, and UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). The Congress will give them an opportunity to engage directly with senior leaders from the global conservation community.

In addition, Transformative Pathways will be the main focus of a dedicated session, ‘Supporting rights and equity in practice’, which will take place from 18:00 to 19:30 on Saturday 11th October. If you will be at the Congress, this is a chance to hear firsthand about the work that Transformative Pathways partners have been doing.

We are very pleased to announce that the session will be attended by delegates from our funder, IKI, offering an opportunity for them to meet with indigenous partners face to face for the first time. The session will be followed by a screening of the film ‘Constructing Autonomy: Stories of indigenous governance in Peru’, which was coproduced by the Wampis Nation (GTANW) and LifeMosaic within the Transformative Pathways project.

We invite all Congress participants to visit the Reimagining Conservation Pavilion and explore new approaches to rights-based, community-led conservation.
