Country case studies on using traditional knowledge indicators for rights-based monitoring of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
Organisation: UNEP-WCMC
Year: 2026
In January 2026, government partners, community representatives and technical experts gathered for the Second Expert Workshop on Traditional Knowledge Indicators. This report presents case studies from Kenya, Colombia and the Philippines on monitoring land-use change and land tenure in Indigenous and community territories (headline indicator 22.1), and from Finland on Sámi traditional occupations (headline indicator 9.2). It shows that rights-based monitoring is delivering benefits for communities and governments and helping to achieve the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The report also sets out practical actions to improve the uptake and use of these indicators.
